COVID-19 DELAYS START OF SEASON

Good morning fastball players, coaches, and fans alike. We, at the RPMFL, are hopeful and anxious to play ball this summer, when exactly that will be will be decided by Softball Sask and the Sask Health Authority. We have 2 tentative schedules in place and sent to managers as of today and will post those in the coming weeks if the Re-Open Sask Plan continues to go well. Due to limitations on public and private gathering numbers limited to 10 at the moment and Softball Sask suspending play until at least May 15th, league play will obviously be pushed back some. We are truly hoping to play ball this summer and we will make it happen if it is at all possible!

Mike Jordan

Rosebud Junior Royals crowned Bantam “A” Boys Softball Champions

For the 6th time in seven years, the Rosebud Junior Royals (formerly the Wadena Wildcats) have captured the Provincial boys softball
title. The tournament, held in Wadena, featured Saskatchewan’s three “A” teams, from Wadena and area, Saskatoon and Shellbrook. The Junior Royals won both round robin games on Saturday by scores of 8-0 and 10-5, giving them a bye to the Final. In the final, the boys faced the Saskatoon Selects. On the offensive side, Luke Scutchings was 2-for-3 with a double and triple. On defence, two outstanding plays by right fielder Karter Hamel and a outfield assist at home by centrefielder Griffen Helberg, stymied any chance of Saskatoon getting on the scoreboard. Koby Faubert would throw a complete game, 3-hit shutout as the Royals would take the Final 4-0.

Next up for Juniors is the Rosebud Royal tourney on July 14, then the Leslie Beach men’s tourney followed by the Canadian Championships in Saskatoon from July 30-August 4. The Royals open up play against Newfoundland on July 31 at 9:00 AM. Many of the players then head to Swift Current in August 8 to represent Saskatchewan in the Western Canada Summer Games.

Pitcher James Holowaty was awarded Playoff MVP for his 4 wins, and only allowing 1 run in 11 innings on July 1st. Holowaty might have had some extra help watching over him in this season. On April 16th, his father Mel passed away after a long battle with Cancer. Mel was a former Royal, huge ball fan, and even caught for James when James was starting out as a teenager in men’s tournaments. To start the season James put his dad’s initials on under his hat and dedicated the season to Mel. Royals Catcher Scott Comfort, who has caught for Holowaty since the 1990’s, said "this playoff tournament was hands down the best he’s seen Holowaty pitch and he managed to keep it up for 11 full innings against one of he toughest lineups in the league.” Holowaty dedicated the season to his father, and now has the league trophy, and MVP trophy to show for it.
